“SEX IS A LANGUAGE IN THIS SHOW,” author Rachel Reid boldly declares, igniting a wave of conversation about the provocative nature of her work. In a surprising move, Reid and director Jacob Tierney opened up in an exclusive interview, revealing the creative process behind their controversial sex scenes. Their candid discussion sparked a mixture of admiration and criticism, with both hinting that the upcoming sequels would push boundaries even further. The revealing conversation alluded to hidden complexities in their approach to storytelling, suggesting that their collaboration is far from what audiences expect. The emotional intensity of their words and the subtle implications left many eager to see how these themes would unfold in the future, hinting at even deeper layers to come.

“Sex is a language in this show.” With that striking observation, director and screenwriter Jacob Tierney summed up one of the defining creative philosophies behind Heated Rivalry, the hit television adaptation of Rachel Reid’s beloved Game Changer book series. Sitting alongside Reid during a high-energy appearance at BookCon in New York City, Tierney offered insight into how intimacy, emotion, and storytelling are deeply intertwined in the world they’ve built together.Reid says that her characters from the Game Changers “keep talking”, so she keeps writing about them. The event itself felt almost surreal. As the two Canadians stepped onto the main stage at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, they were greeted by thunderous applause from thousands of fans. The reaction was overwhelming—not just loud, but deeply enthusiastic, the kind of response reserved for global superstars. Yet both Reid and Tierney still seemed slightly disoriented by the scale of their newfound fame, as if they were watching it happen to someone else.

Tierney later admitted that experiencing fan energy in person was still a rare occurrence. Most of the excitement surrounding the show had existed in a digital space—social media posts, fan edits, and online discussions that, while intense, felt somewhat intangible. Standing in front of a live audience changed that. It made everything feel immediate and real, amplifying the sense that Heated Rivalry had grown into something far bigger than either of them had initially imagined.

Since its debut on HBO Max the previous November, the series has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. Tierney’s adaptation of Reid’s novels, which chronicles the complicated, secret romance between rival hockey stars Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, has resonated far beyond its core audience. It has not only boosted interest in hockey but also elevated Reid’s status within the sports romance genre. Meanwhile, lead actors Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie have found themselves thrust into the spotlight, becoming widely recognized figures seemingly overnight.

Behind the scenes, however, the journey has been anything but simple. Tierney is already preparing for the next chapter, with filming for Season 2 expected to begin in the summer. The new season will draw from The Long Game, the sequel to Reid’s original novel, while Reid herself continues to expand the story. She is currently working on a third installment titled Unrivaled, scheduled for release in 2027.

For Reid, the past few years have been marked by both triumph and personal challenge. In August 2023, she was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s disease—a life-altering moment that forced her to reevaluate her pace and priorities. Just days after receiving that diagnosis, she got an unexpected message from Tierney, a stranger at the time, who would soon become a key collaborator in bringing her work to the screen. That message marked the beginning of a partnership that would transform both of their careers.

Despite her growing fame, Reid has remained candid about the pressures she faces. Writing the next chapter in Shane and Ilya’s story has proven more difficult than expected, especially now that millions of readers and viewers are invested in the outcome. She described the experience as “tricky,” acknowledging that the weight of audience expectations can be daunting. Still, she is determined to approach the work the same way she always has—by writing for herself first and trusting that others will connect with it.Covers of books from Reid’s Game Changers series, including the upcoming novel, Unrivaled. At the heart of their collaboration is a shared understanding of what makes the story compelling. For Reid, it begins with the elements she personally loves: forbidden romance, the tension of rivals becoming lovers, and queer love stories that are allowed to end happily. Combined with her passion for hockey, these ingredients naturally came together in Heated Rivalry. She even admitted that if the series had existed without her involvement, she would have been just as obsessed with it as any fan.

Tierney echoed that sentiment from a different perspective. Growing up, he rarely saw stories like this represented on screen—particularly ones that allowed queer characters to experience joy and fulfillment. For him, the series represents not just entertainment but a form of representation that has long been missing. At the same time, he joked about his own critical tendencies, admitting that even as a fan, he would probably have strong opinions about how the story should unfold.

Both creators recalled moments when they first realized the project had become something extraordinary. For Tierney, it wasn’t a single turning point but a series of increasingly surreal experiences, culminating around the release of the sixth episode. By then, the show had taken on a life of its own, with intense fan engagement and widespread चर्चा. Even so, he sometimes questioned whether it was all real or simply an illusion created by the overwhelming response.

Reid’s realization came in a more concrete moment. At a bookstore event shortly after the trailer was released, she watched in amazement as the audience recited every line of the preview in perfect unison. That was when it truly sank in: this story had captured people’s imaginations in a powerful way.

One of the most talked-about aspects of Heated Rivalry is its portrayal of intimacy. While many writers and filmmakers struggle with crafting or depicting sex scenes, Reid and Tierney approach them with enthusiasm and intention. Reid openly admitted that she loves writing these scenes, describing them as one of the easiest and most enjoyable parts of her process. For her, they are not something to shy away from but an opportunity to deepen character connections.

Tierney expanded on this idea by framing sex as a narrative tool rather than mere spectacle. In the show, intimacy functions as a form of communication, revealing layers of the characters that might otherwise remain hidden. Over the course of the story’s eight-year timeline, the evolution of Shane and Ilya’s relationship is reflected in how they connect physically as well as emotionally. Each encounter is different, shaped by where they are in their personal journeys. For Tierney, this makes intimacy one of the most fascinating elements to explore as a storyteller.Hudson Williams (left) and Connor Storrie in a still from Heated Rivalry. Photo: HBO Max via AP

The characters themselves have taken on a life beyond the page and screen. Reid described Shane and Ilya as voices that refuse to fade, continuing to “talk” to her long after she has finished writing. Unlike other characters she has created, who tend to recede once their stories are complete, these two remain persistent, demanding further exploration. It’s one of the reasons she keeps returning to them, expanding their world with each new book.

At the same time, the success of the television adaptation has introduced new challenges. Seeing actors embody her characters so convincingly has made it harder for Reid to separate her original vision from their on-screen portrayals. She joked that she almost wishes she had never met them, acknowledging that it can be difficult to write freely when she knows her words might eventually be spoken aloud. To cope with this, she tries to mentally disconnect the writing process from the reality of production, focusing instead on the story as if it exists only for her.

Despite the obstacles, Reid remains committed to completing Unrivaled. She has set a firm release date and is determined to meet it, regardless of the challenges along the way. That determination reflects the same passion that first brought Shane and Ilya to life—a passion that continues to drive both her and Tierney as they navigate the ever-expanding world of Heated Rivalry.

In the end, their collaboration is built on a shared belief in the power of storytelling—not just to entertain, but to connect, represent, and resonate. And judging by the reaction of fans around the world, it’s a language that people are more than ready to understand.
