Executives behind the hit LGBTQ+ hockey drama Heated Rivalry have reassured fans that while they are eager to bring the series back to screens, they are committed to giving creator Jacob Tierney the creative freedom and time necessary to produce another outstanding season.
Speaking exclusively about the future of the acclaimed series, Bell Media executives Justin Stockman and Carlyn Klebuc confirmed that Season 2 remains on track to premiere on Canadian streaming service Crave in the spring of 2027. Filming is expected to begin later this year, with several international partners, including HBO and multiple global broadcasters and streaming platforms, already attached to the project.
The executives shared the update ahead of Bell Media’s annual upfront presentation, where the company introduced its extensive lineup of original programming for the 2026/27 season. Among the newly announced projects was a fresh series featuring Robbie G.K., one of the familiar faces from Heated Rivality, highlighting Bell Media’s continued investment in original Canadian productions.
Although fans have been anxiously awaiting news about the next installment, Stockman emphasized that quality remains the top priority. According to him, the writing process is progressing smoothly, and early developments have been extremely encouraging.
“The scripts are coming together really well,” Stockman explained, expressing confidence that viewers will be pleased with what the creative team has prepared. He suggested that the additional time invested in the writing process would ultimately benefit the series, ensuring the second season lives up to the high expectations established by the first.
Bell Media had previously hinted at the possibility of producing a special bonus episode to bridge the gap between the debut season and Season 2. The idea was mentioned after the first season premiered in late 2025 and quickly developed a passionate fan following. However, Stockman admitted there are currently no new updates regarding whether that extra episode will move forward.
For now, the primary focus remains completing the second season.
Klebuc acknowledged that everyone involved with the production would naturally have preferred a faster turnaround. Nevertheless, she stressed that Tierney’s dual responsibilities as both writer and director require a significant amount of time, especially given the emotional complexity and high production standards that have become hallmarks of the series.
She explained that Tierney deserves the opportunity to carefully develop every aspect of the story instead of rushing production simply to meet audience demand. Bell Media believes that allowing him to work at his own pace will ultimately result in another memorable season.
“We would have liked it sooner,” Klebuc admitted, “but Jacob is writing and directing, and he needs the time to create another beautiful season. We’re confident he’ll deliver.”
The executives also sought to reassure fans who have expressed concern about the lengthy wait between seasons. While anticipation continues to grow across social media, Klebuc pointed out that many successful prestige television dramas have experienced even longer production gaps.
She referenced HBO’s Euphoria as an example, noting that its fans waited several years between seasons. Compared to productions of that scale, she argued, Heated Rivalry is actually returning relatively quickly despite the perception of a long delay.
The series has attracted an enthusiastic online community since its debut, with fans closely monitoring every casting rumor, production update, and behind-the-scenes announcement. Every new piece of information has generated widespread discussion across social media platforms, demonstrating the show’s rapidly expanding popularity.
Stockman revealed that Season 1 experienced an unusually fast rise in popularity after Bell Media decided to move its release schedule forward. Originally planned for a February 2026 launch, the company ultimately chose to premiere the series during the holiday season of 2025 because excitement surrounding the project had grown significantly before release.
The decision proved successful, as the drama quickly established itself as one of Crave’s standout original productions.
Stockman also disclosed that the production team was still putting the finishing touches on episodes while the series was already airing. Editing continued throughout the broadcast period, illustrating the demanding schedule behind the scenes.
Despite having been available for months, Heated Rivalry continues to attract new audiences. According to Stockman, the series recently climbed back into Crave’s Top 10 most-watched titles, demonstrating that fresh viewers are still discovering the drama long after its original release.
He believes this continued momentum will help minimize the perceived wait for Season 2.
“People are still finding Season 1,” Stockman said. “Hopefully, by the time Season 2 arrives, the gap won’t seem nearly as long because new audiences will continue joining the fanbase, and the excitement surrounding the return will outweigh the months of waiting.”
Meanwhile, developments have also taken place behind the scenes at Accent Aigu Entertainment, the production company responsible for creating Heated Rivalry. The company recently announced a significant restructuring of its leadership team as it prepares for future projects.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/Matthew-Finlan-Heated-Rivalry-04-020226-ce2748fbcb3b425983e7a42c5f84aa67.jpg)
Under the new organizational structure, Jacob Tierney has assumed the role of Chief Creative Officer, allowing him to focus primarily on the artistic direction of the company’s productions. Brendan Brady has been appointed Chief Executive Officer, overseeing business operations and strategic growth.
The restructuring also included several additional executive promotions and new appointments, reflecting the company’s ambitions to expand its portfolio following the success of Heated Rivalry.
Although production planning continues, Bell Media has yet to officially confirm the complete cast for Season 2. Nevertheless, executives remain optimistic that many of the key performers from the first season will return to continue their characters’ journeys.
The series centers on the secret romantic relationship between professional hockey players Ilya and Shane, whose love story unfolds against the highly competitive and often unforgiving world of elite ice hockey. Their relationship serves as the emotional heart of the drama, exploring themes of identity, secrecy, ambition, and personal sacrifice.
Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams portray the lead characters, earning praise from both critics and viewers for their performances and on-screen chemistry during the show’s debut season.
The supporting cast also features several well-known performers, including François Arnaud, Robbie G.K., Sophie Nélisse, and Ksenia Daniela Kharlamova, all of whom contributed to the emotional depth and authenticity that helped distinguish the series from other sports dramas.
While no official casting announcements have been made regarding Season 2, Bell Media hopes much of the original ensemble will return once production begins later this year.
As anticipation continues to build, executives remain confident that patience will ultimately pay off. Rather than rushing new episodes into production, they believe investing additional time in the writing, directing, and overall creative process will allow Heated Rivalry to maintain the storytelling quality that first captivated audiences.
With filming expected to start before the end of the year and a planned spring 2027 release still firmly in place, fans can look forward to the next chapter of Ilya and Shane’s story knowing that the creative team is prioritizing excellence over speed. For Bell Media, the goal is not simply to produce another season, but to deliver one that meets—and ideally surpasses—the expectations created by the breakout success of the original series.
