Blackpink’s latest EP “Deadline” sold 1.46 million copies on its first day, setting a record for the highest first-day sales by a K-pop girl group.
“Blackpink’s third EP ‘Deadline’ sold 1,461,785 copies in a single day, according to data from Hanteo Chart,” YG Entertainment, the group’s agency, said. “The figure not only sets a record for the group but also marks the highest first-day sales for a K-pop girl group in history.”“My World,” aespa’s 2023 mini album, previously held that achievement with 1.37 million units sold on its first day of release.
Before “Deadline,” Blackpink’s best first-day record was “Born Pink” (2022), which sold 1.01 million copies.
YG added that the new album also topped the iTunes album charts in 32 regions. The lead track “GO” also ranked high on major domestic streaming platforms.
“Deadline” marks the girl group’s first release in three years and five months.
Blackpink debuted in 2016 with the single “Square One.” The group, comprising members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa, is known for songs such as “Whistle” (2016), “Ddu-Du Ddu-Du” (2018), “How You Like That” (2020), “Pink Venom” (2022) and “Shut Down” (2022).
Despite the staggering commercial success, the release of Deadline has been shadowed by the ongoing production credit controversy involving Dr. Luke. While the sales figures confirm Blackpink’s unwavering “GP” (general public) appeal and the massive mobilization of their global fanbase, BLINKs, social media remains divided over the ethical implications of the collaboration. Industry analysts suggest that the record-breaking numbers are a testament to the three-year hiatus’s built-up anticipation, though they warn that long-term streaming stability may be tested if the boycott initiated by international fans continues to gain traction.
The title track “GO” has already carved out a dominant position on Spotify’s Global Top 50, bolstered by a high-budget music video that surpassed 80 million views within its first 24 hours. The song’s success is particularly significant as it showcases a more mature, synth-heavy sound for the group, deviating from their traditional “girl crush” hip-hop roots. Fans have praised the vocal arrangements and the seamless integration of all four members’ songwriting contributions, marking this era as the most “autobiographical” project in Blackpink’s decade-long career.
In Seoul, the excitement surrounding the comeback has manifested in massive “Deadline” pop-up stores and digital billboards across Gangnam and Hongdae. YG Entertainment has announced a series of “surprise” global events to celebrate the album’s launch, hinting at a world tour that could potentially break the record set by their previous Born Pink tour. However, the agency still faces mounting pressure to address the leaked production notes, with several major fanbases demanding a formal statement regarding the selection process for the album’s B-side tracks.
As the first week of promotions kicks off with a highly anticipated performance on Inkigayo, the K-pop industry is closely watching how Deadline performs against upcoming releases from rival fourth and fifth-generation groups. With 1.46 million copies already in the hands of fans, Blackpink has once again proven their status as the “biggest girl group in the world,” successfully navigating a complex landscape of sky-high expectations and intense public scrutiny. The coming days will determine if the album can sustain its momentum and perhaps become the best-selling K-pop girl group album of all time.
