CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY REVEALS “MONSTER DEBATE” BEHIND CAL’S ENGAGEMENT IN SULLIVAN’S CROSSING — AND WHY THE FINAL DECISION DIVIDED CREATIVE TEAMS OVER WHAT KIND OF LOVE STORY THEY WERE REALLY TELLING The actor opens up about extensive discussions surrounding Cal’s proposal to Maggie, revealing how conflicting ideas about strength, boundaries, and romantic payoff nearly changed the direction of one of the season’s most pivotal moments.

Chad Michael Murray is opening up about one of the most debated creative decisions in “Sullivan’s Crossing,” revealing that Cal and Maggie’s engagement was far from a simple scripted moment — and instead the result of months of behind-the-scenes discussion, rewrites, and conflicting perspectives about what the couple should represent at that stage of their relationship.

The Netflix hit, which follows neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) as she returns to her Nova Scotia hometown and rebuilds her life amid family tensions, romantic complications, and unresolved history, has steadily built its reputation on emotional slow burns rather than easy resolutions. Across season four, Maggie’s relationship with Cal (Murray) is tested repeatedly as her estranged husband Liam (Marcus Rosner) re-enters her life, forcing old wounds back into the present and pushing every relationship dynamic into uncomfortable territory.

By the time the finale arrives, Maggie and Cal’s engagement lands as both a relief and a surprise — a tonal shift after a season defined by mistrust, secrecy, and emotional hesitation. But according to Murray, the decision to end the season that way was anything but unanimous.

“That proposal was a monster debate,” Murray says. “It was a really long conversation, for months, with everybody from the top down. There were so many versions of how that could go.”

At the center of the discussion was a key concern: whether Cal proposing to Maggie, after everything that had transpired with Liam, risked sending the wrong message about boundaries, self-worth, and emotional compromise.

For Murray, the answer depended entirely on how Cal’s emotional arc was framed.

“One of the things I kept coming back to was that Cal needed to draw a line in the sand,” he explains. “Being walked over isn’t healthy for anyone. It doesn’t matter who you are — man, woman, it doesn’t matter. At some point, you have to protect your own emotional space.”

That philosophy became the backbone of how Cal’s final decision was shaped. Rather than positioning the engagement as a reaction to Maggie’s indecision, Murray pushed for it to be rooted in clarity — a conscious choice from a man who refuses to remain in emotional limbo any longer.

“There were versions where Maggie was the one doing the proposing, versions where it went in completely different directions,” he says. “But I had a lot of conversations to make sure Cal’s decision felt grounded. It needed to come from self-respect, not desperation.”

The tension in season four stems largely from Maggie’s inability — or unwillingness — to fully confront her unresolved connection with Liam. His sudden return disrupts her fragile equilibrium with Cal, especially after she hides key emotional truths, including an intimate kiss that never gets immediately disclosed.

That secrecy becomes the emotional fracture point of the season, and it’s exactly what made the engagement conversation so complicated behind the scenes.

“You’re dealing with a situation where trust is already being tested,” Murray says. “So if you’re going to end the season with a proposal, it has to mean something deeper than just ‘we love each other.’ It has to acknowledge everything that almost broke them.”

According to Murray, multiple drafts of the finale were explored before landing on the version viewers eventually saw. Some leaned more heavily into Maggie taking control of the relationship. Others pushed Cal further away entirely. A few even delayed the engagement concept altogether.

“There wasn’t just one clean path to it,” he adds. “It was really about figuring out what kind of relationship we want to show people at this point in their journey.”

Despite the internal debates, Murray says he hasn’t been surprised by the audience reaction so far, even though he admits he hasn’t fully seen the broader fan response yet.

“I haven’t seen everything people are saying,” he says, “but I do know a lot of people responded positively to the final episode. There was a sense of relief, I think.”

That relief is something the series has been carefully building toward, even as it continues to complicate Maggie’s emotional world. While Liam’s presence introduces instability, Cal’s role has increasingly become that of a grounding force — though not one without his own frustrations and emotional boundaries.

Sullivan's Crossing Season 4

For Murray, that distinction is essential moving forward. He doesn’t view Cal and Maggie’s engagement as an endpoint, but rather a new structural foundation for future storytelling.

“I want to see unity,” he says. “I want to see them functioning as a team. I don’t want the drama to come from inside the relationship anymore. I want it to come from the outside — from life, from circumstance, from everything they have to face together.”

That shift, he explains, is what would differentiate a stable romantic arc from a cyclical one driven by repeated misunderstandings.

“I think relationships on TV can fall into patterns where the same issues keep repeating,” he says. “But what I’d love to see is Cal and Maggie actually learning from everything they’ve been through, and applying it together instead of against each other.”

The engagement, then, becomes less about romance in isolation and more about emotional alignment — two people choosing to stop competing with external chaos and instead confronting it side by side.

“It’s about partnership,” Murray says. “That’s what I hope people take from it.”

As “Sullivan’s Crossing” continues to expand its audience on Netflix, the creative decisions behind its most pivotal moments are becoming just as scrutinized as the story itself. And in the case of Cal and Maggie’s engagement, what might have looked like a straightforward romantic payoff was, in reality, a carefully negotiated conclusion shaped by questions of respect, timing, and emotional truth.

For Murray, that complexity is exactly what makes the series worth continuing.

“At the end of the day, you want characters who feel like they’re growing,” he says. “Not just surviving the story, but learning how to actually be better inside of it.”
