After serving as one of the central antagonists throughout the first season, Davis Collins is no longer part of the main cast, and according to star Josh Duhamel, that departure could completely change the future for Staten Kirkland.

While Davis’ exit certainly leaves a noticeable gap in the show’s ongoing ranch feud, Duhamel believes it also creates something Staten has been denied for years: the opportunity to finally put his personal happiness ahead of endless conflict.

For much of season 1, Staten found himself caught between protecting the Double K Ranch and pursuing the relationship he had always wanted with Quinn O’Grady. Every time the pair seemed close to finding happiness, another crisis emerged to pull them apart.

“I think he’s happy to see him go, to be honest,” Duhamel admitted.

The actor explained that Staten never truly believed Davis could be trusted, even after the two men appeared to establish an uneasy alliance following years of rivalry.

“I think that it was that he didn’t trust him,” Duhamel said. “It was one of those things where he thought that he had sort of an alliance with him after years of sort of being on the opposite side of the fence.”

Instead of mourning Davis’ absence, Staten sees it as the removal of one of the biggest obstacles in his life.

“I don’t think Staten’s missing him in any kind of way,” Duhamel continued. “And if anything, I think it cleared the canvas for him to finally properly go after Quinn and pursue the relationship that he’s always wanted.”

Those comments perfectly capture the emotional direction Ransom Canyon appears to be taking in its second season.

Although the ranch wars remain a major part of the story, the emotional heart of the series has always been Staten and Quinn’s complicated romance.

Their relationship has never been simple.

During the same interview, Duhamel was asked whether Quinn has now become more important to Staten than preserving the Double K Ranch.

The actor’s answer revealed that Staten no longer views those two dreams as separate goals.

Instead, they have become part of the same future.

“Yeah,” Duhamel responded. “I think that it’s all together.”

He explained that Staten’s perspective changed forever after losing both his wife and son.

The ranch once represented something much larger than property or business success.

It represented family.

“I think what it is, honestly, is that after he lost his wife and his son, you build these things for your family,” Duhamel said. “You build them to pass on. There’s a purpose behind it all.”

After suffering those devastating losses, that purpose disappeared.

“And when they were gone, he didn’t have a lot of purpose,” he continued. “He just had this big ranch he had to take care of. It’s the only thing he’s ever known, but he has nobody to really share it with anymore.”

For years, he poured all of his energy into protecting Double K because it was the only meaningful connection remaining to the family he had lost.

“I think that he wants it all to sort of coexist,” Duhamel added before jokingly suggesting where that future might eventually lead.

“Maybe we have a baby. We should have a baby. Somebody to pass this thing on to.”

Now, for perhaps the first time since losing his family, he is beginning to think about building a new one.
