Fans of Heated Rivalry are going to have to be patient, because the highly anticipated second season is still some time away. After the first season of the hockey romance became one of the biggest surprise television hits of late 2025, expectations surrounding its return have reached another level entirely.

The Crave adaptation of Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels quietly arrived on HBO Max on November 28, 2025, before rapidly turning into a genuine cultural phenomenon. What initially looked like a relatively niche hockey romance quickly attracted a massive international audience, with viewers becoming deeply invested in the complicated relationship between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov.

Now, with Season 2 officially in development, stars Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie are dealing with the unexpected fame that came from playing the show’s central couple while also pursuing new projects outside the series. That has created an unusually long wait for fans, but there is already plenty of information about what the next chapter could bring.

The current target for Heated Rivalry Season 2 is spring 2027, with April emerging as a likely window. That means viewers could still be several months away from seeing Shane and Ilya back on screen, although production is expected to get underway much sooner.

Creator Jacob Tierney recently told Gayle King on CBS that filming is scheduled to begin in August, once he finishes writing the second season. The timing suggests that the production team is already moving steadily toward cameras rolling, even if the finished episodes remain a considerable distance away.

The biggest question, naturally, is what Season 2 will actually be about. The answer is particularly exciting for fans of Reid’s books because the upcoming season will primarily adapt The Long Game, the sixth installment in the Game Changers series and the direct continuation of Shane and Ilya’s story.

Tierney has already suggested that the adaptation could potentially stretch the material across two parts because there is so much story to work with. Unlike the first season, which introduced viewers to the secret relationship between the two hockey superstars, The Long Game deals with what happens after years of secrecy, fame and emotional baggage.

The story picks up after Shane and Ilya have spent roughly a decade together while keeping their romance hidden from the public. Ilya has reached a point where he wants their relationship to become public, but Shane remains worried that coming out could jeopardize his career and standing within professional hockey.

That conflict is expected to form a major part of Season 2, but Tierney has emphasized that the story will be considerably more emotionally mature than what audiences saw in the first season.

At BookCon 2026, the creator described The Long Game as an emotionally sophisticated story that treats Shane and Ilya’s relationship seriously. There will still be plenty of flirting, romance and intimacy, but the emphasis will shift toward the realities of maintaining a long-term relationship once the immediate excitement and danger have faded.

Tierney has previously explained that one of the things that attracted him to Reid’s books was the knowledge that seemingly small details from the characters’ earlier relationship would eventually become major issues. Rather than turning Shane and Ilya’s future into an endless cycle of dramatic misunderstandings, the series will explore the more complicated question of what it actually takes to make a relationship work.

That could make Season 2 a very different experience from Season 1 while still retaining the chemistry that made the original series such a hit.

The new season will also expand the Game Changers universe considerably. Justice Smith and Charlie Gillespie have joined the cast as Harris Drover and Troy Barrett, the couple at the center of Role Model, another story from Reid’s hockey universe.

Emily Hampshire, Edvin Ryding, Robert Naylor, Sabrina Jalees and Priyanka have also been announced as new additions. Hampshire will play Vanessa, while Ryding has been cast as Luca Haas. Jalees will portray agent Farah Jalali, Priyanka will play Tarek and Naylor will take on the role of Wyatt Hayes, a prominent character who serves as the starting goaltender for the Ottawa Centaurs.

There are even more additions for book fans to get excited about. Daniel Diemer and Shaheen Jafargholi will appear as Ryan Price and Fabian Salah, characters connected to Tough Guy, the third book in Reid’s series.

The sheer number of new characters has sparked speculation that Season 2 could devote more time to stories beyond Shane and Ilya. However, Tierney has been clear that the original couple will remain at the center of the television series.

Another relationship fans would love to see receive more attention is that of Scott Hunter and Kip. Robbie G.K., who plays Kip, previously expressed his interest in exploring what happened to the couple after the events viewers witnessed in the first season.

The international reach of Heated Rivalry is also expanding. HBO Max will remain one of the show’s major streaming homes, while Lionsgate Play has committed to carrying Season 2 in India. Sky will also bring the new episodes to viewers in the United Kingdom.

The series was originally created for Canada’s Crave, with Sphere Abacus handling international distribution, helping turn what began as a Canadian production into a global streaming success.

Meanwhile, the story of Shane and Ilya is also continuing in book form. Rachel Reid has another Game Changers novel on the way, titled Unrivaled, although fans will have to wait longer than initially expected to read it.

The seventh book was originally scheduled for September 29, 2026, but its publication has been pushed back to June 1, 2027. The story picks up with Shane and Ilya in a dramatically different position. After more than a decade of hiding their relationship, the pair are now publicly together, married and playing for the same team.

That new reality does not necessarily mean everything becomes easy. The synopsis promises a divided hockey world and suggests that even with the support they receive after going public, their relationship will continue to face challenges.

Reid has explained that worsening Parkinson’s symptoms have made the writing process more difficult, which contributed to the delay. However, the author has reassured readers that the book is progressing and that she wants to make sure the finished story lives up to expectations.

The growing success of Heated Rivalry has also given Williams and Storrie opportunities beyond the series. Williams is set to star opposite Dylan O’Brien in Apparatus, a darkly comedic thriller from Canadian filmmaker Sofia Banzhaf. The film follows Tyler, a struggling rideshare driver whose life changes after he becomes involved with an ambitious entrepreneur whose seemingly perfect opportunity takes an increasingly dangerous turn.

Williams is also attached to Yaga, a new Crave half-hour series inspired by the mythology surrounding Baba Yaga. The project features a notable cast that includes Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid and Clark Backo.

Storrie, meanwhile, has been expanding his own profile, including an appearance as host of Saturday Night Live. He is also set to star in A24’s Peaked alongside Molly Gordon, Allie Levitan and Emma Mackey, with additional cast members including Laura Dern, Simone Ashley, Levon Hawke, Mitra Jouhari and Gabby Windey. Dua Lipa has also joined the project.

For fans worried that the growing careers of the two stars could somehow affect Heated Rivalry, there is currently no indication that Shane and Ilya are going anywhere. Season 2 remains firmly in development, and the planned return of the central duo is still the heart of the project.

The long wait may be frustrating, but it could ultimately benefit the series. With The Long Game offering considerably deeper material, a larger ensemble and higher emotional stakes, the second season has the opportunity to evolve beyond the explosive first chapter without losing what made viewers fall in love with Shane and Ilya in the first place.

For now, the countdown continues. If everything stays on schedule, cameras will begin rolling in August, with Heated Rivalry Season 2 targeting a spring 2027 premiere. And after the phenomenon created by the first season, it is safe to say that fans will be watching every update very closely.
