Peter Chernin celebrates a rare Hollywood milestone after Apex continued its reign at the top of Netflix’s global charts for the second consecutive week. However, another film is also having an impressive debut, and the intense race on the charts continues, promising explosive viewership growth.

For years, Peter Chernin has quietly remained one of the most influential figures in modern entertainment, even if his name isn’t always the one dominating headlines. But this week, the veteran producer and former News Corp. chairman achieved something that very few companies — let alone independent studios — have ever managed to pull off.
His company, North Road Company, simultaneously produced the number one movie and number one television series on Netflix’s global charts.

Apex Man on Fire
That’s an enormous achievement in today’s streaming landscape, where competition between studios, streamers, and production companies has become increasingly brutal. Even major legacy studios struggle to consistently land breakout hits, let alone dominate both film and television rankings at the same time.
Leading the film side is Apex, the survival thriller starring Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton. In its second week of release, the movie reportedly pulled in a massive 40.2 million views, making it the most-watched English-language film currently on Netflix worldwide.
At the same time, Man on Fire claimed the top spot on Netflix’s English-language television chart with 11 million views. The series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and adapts the novels by A. J. Quinnell, which previously inspired the 2004 film starring Denzel Washington.
Together, the two projects represent a major moment not only for North Road but also for the shifting power structure inside Hollywood.
According to reports, no independent producer had previously managed to simultaneously hold Netflix’s top movie and top television series. Major studios like Sony have pulled it off before, but North Road accomplishing the feat without operating as a traditional legacy studio makes the achievement especially significant.
It also arrives at a fascinating moment for the company itself.
North Road is currently preparing for a major merger with French production powerhouse Mediawan, a move that could potentially create one of the largest independent content operations in the industry. The timing makes this week’s chart domination feel less like a lucky coincidence and more like a statement of intent.

Scott Manson, CEO of North Road Company, framed the success as proof of the company’s creative ambitions.
“We’re so proud of our creative teams, and this moment is really a testament to how high of a bar we’ve set for them,” Manson told Variety. “They’ve always managed to meet and exceed those expectations.”
Meanwhile, Chernin himself emphasized the range of content the company is currently producing.
“The ratings success was a great indicator of our diversity and quality,” he explained, while also referencing projects like Love Is Blind and Hulk Hogan: Real American as examples of the company’s broad entertainment portfolio.
What’s particularly interesting is how differently Apex and Man on Fire function as projects.
Apex is loud, physical, heavily marketed, and built around star power. The film follows Theron’s Sasha, a grieving climber trapped in a deadly wilderness hunt against Egerton’s terrifying antagonist. Reviews for the movie have been mixed, with many critics divided on its ending and story logic, but audiences clearly showed up anyway.
And Netflix went all-in on making sure people knew the film existed.
The streamer launched an aggressive marketing campaign surrounding the movie, reportedly blanketing major cities with promotional materials featuring Theron. The Oscar winner even climbed a structure in Times Square as part of the promotional rollout, leaning fully into the movie’s adrenaline-heavy identity.
Chernin specifically praised Theron’s commitment to supporting the project.
“Charlize deserves so much credit for this,” he said. “She did what you hope a star would do, which is really dedicate herself to supporting it. She’s justifiably proud of the movie.”
Honestly, that enthusiasm probably helped the movie significantly.
Theron has spent years building credibility as one of Hollywood’s most reliable action stars, particularly after films like Mad Max: Fury Road and Atomic Blonde. Even viewers skeptical about Apex itself seemed drawn in by the sheer intensity of the marketing campaign and Theron’s physical commitment to the role.

The movie’s soundtrack also became unexpectedly crucial to its success online.
One sequence in particular — featuring Go by The Chemical Brothers — exploded across TikTok and social media after viewers became obsessed with the tension-filled hunting scene attached to the track.
The song reportedly climbed Spotify’s Viral 50 chart and became Shazam’s most searched global song of the week after the movie’s release. That kind of soundtrack crossover moment is increasingly rare for streaming films and helped Apex maintain momentum beyond its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Man on Fire represents almost the opposite type of success story.
Instead of spectacle-driven survival thrills, the series leans into psychological intensity and emotional trauma, anchored heavily by Abdul-Mateen II’s performance. The original 2004 film starring Washington became a cult favorite over the years, so expectations surrounding the adaptation were already high.
But the series appears to have connected with audiences on its own terms rather than simply relying on nostalgia.
That balance — prestige television on one side and big commercial action filmmaking on the other — may ultimately explain why North Road is becoming such a powerful player. The company isn’t locked into one creative lane.
It can produce awards-friendly drama, reality television, franchise material, prestige streaming content, and mainstream action simultaneously.
In an industry where streamers constantly demand massive quantities of content while still chasing prestige credibility, that versatility becomes incredibly valuable.
And importantly, North Road’s success arrives during a period where many entertainment companies are struggling to consistently create cultural moments.
Streaming audiences are fragmented. Social media attention shifts constantly. Even huge projects often disappear from public conversation within days.
Yet both Apex and Man on Fire managed to break through the noise simultaneously.
Naturally, conversations about future installments are already beginning.
While there are currently no official greenlights for either an Apex sequel or a second season of Man on Fire, both Manson and Chernin acknowledged that discussions will likely happen soon.
That feels almost inevitable given the numbers.
Netflix has become increasingly aggressive about extending successful properties into franchises whenever possible, especially if projects generate strong completion rates and social media engagement. Apex in particular feels intentionally designed to leave room for future installments, even if audience reactions to the ending were divided.
And despite criticism from some reviewers, viewers clearly connected with something about the movie’s intensity, atmosphere, and performances.
For Peter Chernin, though, this week’s accomplishment probably represents something even bigger than a single hit movie or TV show.
After decades inside Hollywood, he’s now proving that independent production companies can still compete directly with massive studios in the streaming era — and occasionally even outperform them.
