“THE PITT’S GERRAN HOWELL OPENS UP ABOUT DR. WHITAKER’S SHIFT TO A MORE CONFIDENT ROLE IN SEASON 2: ‘HE’S TAKING UP MORE SPACE NOW!'” – The Pitt actor Gerran Howell discusses how his character, Dr. Whitaker, has grown from a fearful rookie to a capable and assertive medical professional in Season 2. Discover what’s next for Whitaker and how Howell’s personal experiences with social anxiety influenced his portrayal of this transformation.

Gerran Howell, the actor behind Dr. Dennis Whitaker in The Pitt, has seen his character evolve significantly since the show’s first season. Now, as Season 2 comes to a close, Howell reflects on his journey with the character and the rapid growth of the series. The Pitt has skyrocketed in popularity, attracting millions of viewers and garnering critical acclaim for its medical realism and compelling character arcs. In an interview, Howell shares his insights into Whitaker’s development, the pressures of working on a hit show, and his own journey as an actor.

A Newfound Confidence for Whitaker

When viewers first met Dr. Dennis Whitaker in The Pitt, he was a wide-eyed, overwhelmed medical student. Howell describes Whitaker as a “farm boy” who was simply trying to keep up in a high-stakes environment. The character’s growth in Season 2, however, has been remarkable, as he transitions into a more self-assured, competent figure. This change, Howell notes, was intentional: “You have to show a lot of growth there, otherwise Whitaker wouldn’t be there, let’s be honest.”

For Howell, portraying this shift was a rewarding challenge. “In Season 1, I had a very easy job of just letting things hit metaphorically and physically,” Howell explains. “I was a wide-eyed, naive farm boy overwhelmed by everything.” However, by Season 2, Howell had to shed that vulnerability. “I was excited that I got to shed that for Season 2,” he says. “It was really fun to do. Whitaker is now more comfortable, more capable, and more confident.”

By the end of Season 2, Howell feels that Whitaker has become a character who knows his worth, both in his professional and emotional capacities. “He’s thriving a little bit when we find him, I think,” Howell adds, “He’s found his place, and he knows he’s good at what he does. He’s in a mindset where he knows all I have to do is be useful, and I’m kind of good at that.”

Weekly Episode Releases: A Unique Format

One of the standout aspects of The Pitt is its episodic structure, which focuses on long, unbroken shifts at the hospital. The show’s release format—weekly episodes—helps build a connection with the audience that binge-watching doesn’t always allow for. Howell appreciates this slower pacing, which offers viewers a deeper connection to the characters. “We spend a lot of time with these characters, and you are drip-fed their lives,” Howell says. “It’s different from a lot of shows because it’s not immediate. The characters aren’t laid out in front of you immediately. You get to discover them slowly, and I think that’s great.”

This format also allows viewers to truly invest in the characters’ journeys. “With a show that drops all at once, you might forget about it more quickly,” Howell observes. “But when it’s week-to-week, you really get to connect with these people in real-time, and that builds a stronger relationship between the audience and the characters.”

Whitaker’s Journey: From Helper to Provider

Throughout The Pitt, Whitaker has gone from needing support to becoming the one others lean on. This growth in his role at the hospital is particularly evident in Season 2. “At the start of the season, Whitaker is thriving,” Howell explains. “He’s teaching, he’s taking on responsibility, and he’s doing a very good job.” However, by the end of the season, Whitaker’s role shifts. He starts to offer emotional support to his colleagues, learning that being useful isn’t just about physical tasks, but also about providing emotional care for others.

Howell describes this development as a “cumulative” journey for Whitaker. “He’s taking on a lot of people’s problems along with his own. I’m wondering if that will potentially be a downfall for him,” he reflects. “He’s not really showing any signs of stress, but he’s holding a lot in. There’s only so much someone can hold onto, and I think it’s going to come to a head.”

What Attracts People to Whitaker?

Part of what makes Whitaker so relatable, Howell believes, is that he can be a “blank canvas” for others. Whitaker’s willingness to help makes him an easy target for those seeking emotional support, but that also means he’s taking on more than he can handle. “Maybe people are drawn to Whitaker because he seems like someone who can take on other people’s problems,” Howell says. “But I don’t think anyone can do that. Eventually, it’s going to be too much for him.”

For Howell, this part of Whitaker’s journey mirrors his own experience of tackling challenges and embracing personal growth. “You have to follow the challenges as an actor,” he says. “The medical profession was something I was unfamiliar with and intimidated by, but that’s what makes it exciting to me. You have to take on challenges, and that’s where you learn about yourself as well as the character.”

Whitaker’s Future: Emotional Struggles Ahead?

As The Pitt continues, Whitaker’s growth will be tested. Howell anticipates that Whitaker will continue to face emotional challenges, especially as his role as a caregiver deepens. “Whitaker’s a very internal person,” Howell says. “He’s not showing anything on the surface, but he’s taking on a lot from everyone else. It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out.”

Howell predicts that this emotional burden will eventually take its toll. “I think he’s going to reach a point where he can’t keep carrying everyone’s problems,” he says. “It’s got to come to a head. Right now, he’s blissfully unaware of the struggles around him, but he’s going to have to confront it eventually.”

The Challenges of Playing Whitaker

For Howell, one of the most rewarding aspects of playing Whitaker has been the chance to grow as an actor. “Season one was all about tapping into my own fears and anxieties,” he says. “There were a lot of strange synchronicities between my personal life and Whitaker’s struggles.” By Season 2, Howell was able to take the character in a new direction, playing someone who is more confident and self-assured. “It was interesting to learn about social dynamics and how characters like Whitaker interact with others,” Howell reflects.

For Howell, playing a character like Whitaker also provides an opportunity to explore parts of himself that he may not have been fully aware of. “Whitaker has been a really interesting character to play because he’s allowed me to explore parts of myself that I hadn’t considered before,” he says. “You get to look at different archetypes within yourself and see how they play out in a character.”

The Future for Whitaker and The Pitt

Looking ahead, Howell is excited about the potential for Whitaker’s character to continue evolving. As Season 2 comes to a close, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding Whitaker’s future—both in his personal and professional life. “I think Whitaker’s going to keep growing, but it’s going to be interesting to see how he handles the emotional weight he’s carrying,” Howell says.

With the success of The Pitt continuing to build momentum, Howell is looking forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. “The show is a machine that doesn’t stop,” he says. “It’s great to be part of something so exciting, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Whitaker and the rest of the cast.”

As The Pitt continues its journey, viewers can expect even more growth, challenges, and emotional moments from Whitaker as he takes on his role as both a medical professional and an emotional support system for those around him. Howell’s portrayal of Whitaker has captured the hearts of fans, and the character’s evolution promises to be one of the most compelling storylines in the series.
