Heartstopper Forever Stars Reveal Most Intimate Scenes Never Made the Final Cut
Heartstopper Forever could have turned out considerably more intimate than the version audiences ultimately saw on Netflix. According to stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke, the actors filmed far more romantic and physically intimate material than what appeared in the finished movie, with only a small portion of those scenes surviving the editing process.
During a recent appearance on Brittany Broski’s Royal Court, Connor and Locke opened up about what it was like filming the more mature moments between their characters, Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring. The two actors revealed that the production originally shot a surprisingly large amount of intimate footage, much of which was eventually removed before the film was released.
Connor joked that they had filmed “a lot” of intimate material, while Locke estimated that viewers only ended up seeing roughly one-tenth of what had initially been planned or captured. Their comments suggest that the filmmakers had experimented with a much more physically open portrayal of Nick and Charlie’s relationship before deciding to scale things back for the final version.
The actors also recalled how exposed some of the filming process could feel. Connor remembered shooting at least one wide-angle sequence in which both actors had removed their clothes for the scene. Locke humorously exaggerated the experience by comparing the amount of intimate material they filmed to an adult production. Their playful conversation made it clear that the original footage went considerably further than what eventually reached audiences.
Connor also mentioned that there had been discussions behind the scenes about how far certain intimate moments should go. According to him, Locke was particularly enthusiastic about allowing Nick and Charlie to experience a more playful and mature side of their relationship. Locke responded jokingly that he simply wanted the characters to enjoy themselves.
The increased intimacy reflects the natural evolution of a relationship that audiences have watched develop over several years. Based on Alice Oseman’s enormously successful graphic novel series, Heartstopper began as the story of Charlie, an openly gay teenager who has experienced bullying at school. His life begins to change after he develops a close friendship with Nick, a popular and athletic classmate.
Their friendship gradually becomes romantic as Nick begins questioning and eventually understanding his own sexuality. As Nick realizes that he is bisexual, the two teenagers navigate the excitement and uncertainty of first love while also dealing with school, friendships, family expectations, mental health, and the complicated process of discovering who they are.
Over three seasons, the Netflix adaptation followed Nick and Charlie as their relationship became increasingly serious. The show also expanded its focus to include their friends and families, creating a broader portrait of LGBTQ+ teenagers growing up and learning to support one another.
Rather than producing a traditional fourth season, Netflix eventually announced that the story would conclude with a feature-length movie. Titled Heartstopper Forever, the film premiered on July 17 and serves as the final chapter in Nick and Charlie’s on-screen journey.
By this stage of their lives, the characters are no longer dealing only with the uncertainty of beginning a relationship. They are approaching adulthood and facing decisions that could dramatically affect their future together. Nick and Charlie must confront the possibility of spending significant amounts of time apart, becoming more independent, and figuring out what they want their individual lives to look like.
Long distance becomes an especially important concern as their circumstances begin pulling them in different directions. Their relationship remains deeply meaningful to both of them, but the film asks whether the connection they developed as teenagers can survive the enormous changes that come with growing up.
As the characters have matured, the series has also gradually become more comfortable depicting physical intimacy as part of their relationship. Although many of the more revealing scenes filmed for Heartstopper Forever were removed during editing, the finished movie still contains several affectionate and intimate encounters between Nick and Charlie.
Those scenes demonstrate how their relationship has evolved beyond the nervous beginnings shown in earlier seasons. Physical closeness is now presented as another element of the trust and emotional connection they have developed over time. However, the final edit appears to place greater emphasis on the emotional meaning of those moments rather than including everything that was originally filmed.
Filming such scenes also produced some awkward and humorous experiences for the actors. Connor previously discussed the process in an interview with British Vogue, revealing that being partially or fully undressed in front of the cameras was surprisingly not the most embarrassing aspect of production.
Instead, Connor remembered experiencing stomach problems while filming one of the intimate sequences. During an especially awkward moment, he accidentally passed gas while surrounded not only by Locke but also by numerous members of the production crew.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/kit-connor-joe-locke-heartstopper-forever-premiere-072726-886a0261c80349c08783da10a95a8dc2.jpg)
Locke tried to reassure his co-star that the incident was not particularly embarrassing. Connor, however, saw things differently. While Locke knows him well enough that such an accident might not have seemed significant between the two of them, Connor pointed out that dozens of crew members were also present. That made the situation considerably more uncomfortable from his perspective.
The embarrassing story returned during Connor and Locke’s appearance on Royal Court. Broski asked Connor whether his digestive problems had improved since production on Heartstopper Forever ended.
Unfortunately for Connor, the answer was no.
The actor explained that he is currently working on another project that requires him to maintain a particular level of physical fitness. As a result, his diet has become heavily focused on protein and coffee, a combination that apparently has not been particularly kind to his stomach.
Connor admitted that his current eating routine is far from enjoyable. Maintaining his physique for work has forced him to follow dietary habits that he described as unpleasant, and his digestive issues have continued as a result.
Even more challenging, according to Connor, is having to deal with those problems while promoting Heartstopper Forever. Press tours often require actors to spend long periods sitting through interviews, public appearances, and promotional events while remaining composed in front of cameras.
Connor joked that the real difficulty is having to suppress his stomach problems throughout these appearances. His clothing does not necessarily make the situation easier either. Wearing a tightly fastened belt during interviews can make him feel even more restricted, adding another layer of discomfort to an already awkward problem.
The candid conversation between Connor and Locke offered fans a humorous glimpse behind the polished final product. While Heartstopper Forever presents Nick and Charlie’s relationship through carefully constructed emotional and romantic scenes, the reality of filming them involved plenty of awkwardness, laughter, experimentation, and footage that audiences will probably never see.
Their comments also reveal just how much can change between production and the final editing stage of a film. Actors may shoot numerous versions of a scene, including material that ultimately proves unnecessary for the finished story. In the case of Heartstopper Forever, the creative team apparently decided that only a fraction of the intimate footage was required to communicate the development of Nick and Charlie’s relationship.
For fans who have followed the pair from their earliest interactions, the final movie nevertheless represents a significant evolution. Nick and Charlie have grown from uncertain teenagers discovering their feelings into young people preparing for adulthood and confronting the realities of maintaining a serious relationship.
Although viewers may never see the majority of the intimate footage Connor and Locke filmed, the scenes that remained help illustrate how comfortable and emotionally connected their characters have become. Combined with the film’s exploration of independence, distance, and an uncertain future, those moments contribute to a more mature conclusion for the couple.
Ultimately, Heartstopper Forever closes the chapter on a relationship audiences have watched develop across several years, while Connor and Locke’s behind-the-scenes stories show that creating that emotional farewell was sometimes much funnier—and considerably more awkward—than the finished movie makes it appear.:max_bytes(150000):strip_icc():format(webp)/kit-connor-joe-locke-heartstopper-forever-072726-99d89840683e4878ac6b76972d5ad797.jpg)
