‘Lioness’ Star Thad Luckinbill Opens Up About Kyle’s Loyalty to Joe and Taylor Sheridan’s Geopolitical Knowledge

Thad Luckinbill has become one of the most unpredictable figures in Lioness through his portrayal of CIA officer Kyle McManus. Over the course of three seasons, Kyle has developed into an increasingly important member of the story, often finding himself both cooperating and clashing with Joe McNamara, played by Zoe Saldaña.

Their complicated professional relationship becomes even more significant in season 3 when Joe is captured by Russian operatives. While the rest of the team attempts to determine what happened and how to bring her home, Kyle immediately takes action. His methods are aggressive and, at times, controversial, but his determination to locate Joe is unmistakable.

For Luckinbill, Kyle’s motivation is rooted in a long history with Joe that viewers are only beginning to understand.

The actor explained that the writing, along with the chemistry he shares with Saldaña, makes it clear that Kyle and Joe have known one another for a very long time. Their interactions often resemble the relationship between siblings who constantly argue but still have a deep connection.

Luckinbill described them as being almost like a brother and sister. They may disagree frequently, but there is an underlying trust created by years of working together.

Their shared history also helps explain why Kyle reacts so strongly when Joe disappears.

According to Luckinbill, creator Taylor Sheridan gave him an interesting explanation for some of the tension between the two characters. Sheridan suggested that Joe may actually feel a certain amount of resentment toward Kyle because Kyle has completely committed himself to his career.

Kyle does not have the same personal obligations that Joe carries. While Joe has a husband and children waiting for her at home, Kyle appears to be entirely devoted to his work.

He can make difficult decisions without having to consider how those choices might affect a family waiting for him.

Luckinbill sees Kyle and Joe as two people who are remarkably similar in many ways. Both are highly capable, loyal and willing to sacrifice themselves for their country. The major difference is that Joe has a family, and that family constantly influences the decisions she makes.

Kyle, on the other hand, has the freedom to pursue his objectives without the same emotional burden.

That contrast becomes particularly important as season 3 progresses.

Kyle works closely with CIA Deputy Director Byron Westfield, played by Michael Kelly, and operates under different rules than Joe’s QRF team. His position gives him greater authority and access, but it also means that his actions can have serious consequences for everyone around him.

This becomes obvious in episode 4, “Murder Hornets,” when Kyle interrogates two Russian intelligence operatives while trying to discover Joe’s whereabouts.

When one of the men refuses to provide useful information, Kyle ultimately kills him in order to force the other captive to reveal the aircraft’s tail number.

The scene is shocking because Kyle appears to understand exactly how serious his actions are.

Luckinbill confirmed that there was indeed a moment of hesitation before Kyle killed the Russian operative. The actor explained that Kyle was attempting to obtain the information without resorting to murder, but the urgency of Joe’s situation ultimately pushed him past that line.

From Kyle’s perspective, Joe’s life is in immediate danger, and the consequences of allowing her captors to move her out of the country could be catastrophic.

He therefore decides that risking his own career is worth it if it gives the team even a small opportunity to rescue her.

Luckinbill emphasized that Kyle knows his decision is extreme. Killing a foreign intelligence officer on American soil is not a normal or acceptable course of action, even in an emergency.

However, Kyle believes that the circumstances justify taking extraordinary measures.

His willingness to cross that boundary creates a serious problem for the rest of the team.

Bobby, played by Jill Wagner, and the other members of Joe’s QRF team are deeply uncomfortable with what Kyle has done. They may already have complicated feelings toward him, but they understand that his actions could potentially expose them to legal consequences.

Luckinbill explained that the team does not want to face prison because of something Kyle decided to do.

For them, there is a clear distinction between completing a dangerous mission and breaking the rules in a way that could affect everyone involved.

Kyle, however, has spent years dealing with situations where conventional procedures may not be enough.

That experience has shaped his willingness to take risks that others might consider unacceptable.

The actor said he enjoyed filming the sequence in which the team turns against Kyle because it reveals another side of the character. Kyle is used to making difficult decisions independently, but suddenly finding himself challenged by his own colleagues creates an interesting shift in the group dynamic.

The scene also reinforces the uncertainty surrounding Kyle. Viewers still cannot always determine whether they should trust him or question his judgment.

Luckinbill said this ambiguity is one of the reasons Kyle is so enjoyable to play.

He described Kyle as possibly the most entertaining character he has portrayed because the role contains so many different layers.

Rather than approaching Kyle as a straightforward hero or villain, Luckinbill has tried to build a character whose behavior comes from years of experience, responsibility and exposure to dangerous situations.

The actor also revealed that he did not receive all of season 3’s scripts at once.

Because Taylor Sheridan is simultaneously working on numerous television projects, the cast often receives scripts individually. This means the actors sometimes know only what happens in the next episode rather than understanding the entire season.

Luckinbill compared the experience to watching the show as an audience member. After receiving a script, the cast members are often left wondering what will happen next and may even text each other asking when the next episode or script will arrive.

For Luckinbill, that uncertainty is actually part of the fun.

He prefers receiving one script at a time because it allows him to concentrate fully on the material immediately in front of him rather than worrying about the entire season.

Despite his growing role in the series, Luckinbill said he never expected Kyle to become such a major part of the story.

He credits both the audience and Sheridan for allowing the character to develop. If viewers had not responded positively to Kyle, the role might not have expanded in the same way.

Luckinbill is particularly appreciative of Sheridan’s willingness to continue exploring Kyle’s personality and background.

The actor also has enormous respect for Sheridan’s understanding of geopolitics.
