Heated Rivalry, the viral sensation that quickly rose from its modest Canadian roots to become a cultural phenomenon, has faced an unexpected challenge: backlash from a toxic subset of its growing fanbase. The show, which beautifully captures the emotional journey of Shane Hollander, a queer Asian-Canadian hockey captain, and his Russian rival-turned-lover Ilya Rozanov, has resonated deeply with viewers. However, its success has come with a darker side, as certain fans have crossed boundaries with racism, homophobia, and parasocial obsession.

In an exclusive interview with Deadline, creator Jacob Tierney reflected on the overwhelming attention the show has received since its debut, admitting that both the positive and negative reactions were far more intense than anyone involved anticipated. “We didn’t expect any of this attention or reaction from a public that might not exist at all,” he shared. “We’ve learned a lot [since the show aired], and there’s a lot to think about moving forward in terms of the fandom and all that comes with it, negative and positive.”

In response to the discrimination they’ve faced, Williams, Arnaud, and Kharlamova released a joint statement condemning racism, homophobia, biphobia, and parasocial obsession. “Don’t call yourself a fan if you share racist/homophobic/biphobic/misogynistic/ageist/ableist/parasocial/bigoted comments of any kind,” the statement read. “None of us need your hateful ‘love.’ We all respect and support and love each other and are on the same side. If you can’t accept that then gtfoh.”

The statement was shared across the cast’s social media platforms, including Instagram Stories from Tierney, Reid, and fellow cast member Robbie G.K. It was a powerful message not just to the toxic minority of fans but to the entire fanbase: love for the show should be rooted in support, respect, and inclusivity, not in harmful behaviors that undermine the show’s true message.

Despite the negative fan behavior, Tierney remains firm in his commitment to creating a space for diverse representation on screen. He noted the significance of having a non-white lead character in Shane Hollander and emphasized that representation in mainstream media is essential. “We have a non-white lead. I think that’s fuckin’ important,” he said. “We can learn a few lessons out of that: you don’t need to be making an Asian show to have an Asian lead. Hudson’s a fucking star, man.”

Tierney’s remarks highlight the importance of diverse representation in television, especially in shows like Heated Rivalry that tackle themes of queerness, love, and identity. The success of the show has opened doors for more nuanced portrayals of characters from underrepresented communities, but the online backlash has highlighted the deep-rooted prejudice that still exists in fandoms and society at large.

When asked about the trajectory of the second season, Tierney teased that while the show would draw inspiration from The Long Game, the sixth book in Reid’s Game Changers series, it’s unlikely the entire plot will fit into a single season. “Who said I’m doing it all? There’s a lot of material,” Tierney said with a smile, hinting at the possibility of multiple seasons to fully capture the depth of Shane and Ilya’s journey.

The plot of The Long Game follows Shane and Ilya several years after the events of Heated Rivalry. The two characters, now in a real relationship, must contend with the challenges of long-distance dating, Ilya’s growing depression, and the insecurities that both characters face. Tierney assured fans that while Shane and Ilya’s story will ultimately end on a positive note, it will not be without its difficulties along the way.

“We’re just continuing to give Shane and Ilya the seriousness that this love affair deserves while also continuing to exist within the confines of the genre that we’re in, which I love,” Tierney said. “I want them to be happy, but I also want to show that that’s not easy. Because part of what Rachel does so brilliantly in her writing is to give queerness joy, but also not pretend the world isn’t the world. It’s not like she created this world where it’s like, there’s no homophobia and hockey’s amazing, and anyone can come out. No. She shows it’s difficult, takes courage, guts, and sacrifice, and takes stepping up and saying things with your full chest. And that to me is a triumph. That’s what we’re trying to do here.”
