MINKA KELLY DROPPED AN UNEXPECTED CONFESSION ABOUT DAN REYNOLDS’ RANSOM CANYON FUTURE — AND THE SURPRISING ROLE SHE QUIETLY TRIED TO MAKE HAPPEN COULD HAVE CHANGED FAR MORE THAN FANS EVER REALIZED — As season 2 sends Quinn into an emotional new chapter with Staten and a mysterious newcomer, Kelly has now revealed an off-screen idea that almost took a very different direction. The plan never materialized, but her comments hint at a storyline viewers were never meant to see and a behind-the-scenes twist that is only now coming to light.

Minka Kelly is revealing that fans almost got an unexpected reunion in Ransom Canyon season 2 — and it would have added an entirely different twist to Quinn O’Grady’s already complicated love life.

The actress has shared that she tried to convince the creative team to bring back her real-life boyfriend, Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds, after his memorable cameo during the show’s debut season. Although scheduling ultimately prevented his return, Kelly admitted she even pitched the idea of making Reynolds’ character part of Quinn’s romantic dilemma.

The revelation offers a fun behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of Netflix’s biggest romantic dramas, while also highlighting how warmly Reynolds was embraced by both the cast and production team after his surprise appearance.

Season 2 of Ransom Canyon premiered on Netflix on July 23, picking up six months after the dramatic events that closed out the first season. While much of the new installment focuses on Quinn’s complicated relationships with Staten Kirkland and newcomer Oliver, Kelly says there was another possibility briefly discussed behind the scenes.

Speaking with PEOPLE, the actress laughed as she recalled trying to find a way to work Reynolds back into the story.

“We tried to find a way to bring Billy Brinks back,” Kelly said. “I was like, ‘Maybe the triangle is with Billy Brinks.'”

Although her suggestion never became reality, it illustrates just how much everyone involved enjoyed Reynolds’ first appearance in the series.

The Imagine Dragons singer surprised viewers during season 1 by portraying cattle buyer Billy Brinks, a relatively small role that nevertheless became a memorable cameo for fans. His appearance generated considerable buzz, not only because of his real-life relationship with Kelly but also because many viewers were pleasantly surprised by how naturally he fit into the show’s Texas setting.

Unfortunately for fans hoping to see Billy Brinks ride back into town, Reynolds’ increasingly busy schedule made another appearance impossible.

“Sadly, he was unavailable,” Kelly admitted. “He’s a little busy.”

Considering Imagine Dragons continues to tour internationally while Reynolds remains involved in multiple music projects, fitting another acting appearance into his calendar was always going to be a challenge.

Still, Kelly’s comments suggest that the door isn’t necessarily closed forever.

Billy Brinks may have only appeared briefly during season 1, but his unexpected popularity demonstrated that audiences were more than willing to embrace celebrity cameos when they feel authentic to the world of Ransom Canyon. If schedules ever align again, it wouldn’t be surprising if the creative team found another opportunity to bring the character back.

Reynolds’ original appearance almost never happened at all.

Kelly previously explained that his casting came about quite organically after he visited the production during filming. Rather than arriving with any expectation of appearing on screen, Reynolds simply came to spend time with Kelly while she was working.

His visit quickly made an impression.

According to Kelly, everyone involved with the production immediately connected with the musician.

“When season 1 premiered,” she previously recalled, “everyone, all the producers and writers, just naturally fell in love with him, like you do.”

The actress added that Reynolds’ personality made the decision remarkably easy.

“It’s easy to love Dan.”

Eventually, someone on the creative team floated the possibility of him stepping in front of the camera.

“They just asked one day, ‘Do you think he’d play this character?’ And I just was like, ‘Let me ask him,'” Kelly remembered.

Fortunately for everyone involved, Reynolds didn’t hesitate.

“He was such a good sport and down to play.”

Despite performing before enormous crowds throughout his music career, Kelly revealed there was one surprising aspect of Reynolds’ acting debut.

He was nervous.

“Surprisingly nervous,” Kelly said of her boyfriend’s experience on set.

The actress admitted she found that reaction amusing given Reynolds’ career as the frontman of one of the world’s biggest rock bands.

“I’m like, how could you be nervous? With what you do?” she recalled thinking. “I guess it’s just a different environment.”

It’s a reminder that acting and performing live music require very different skill sets, even for experienced entertainers accustomed to working in front of millions of people.

While Billy Brinks didn’t return, season 2 certainly doesn’t lack romantic complications.

The newest episodes find Quinn returning home after spending six months in New York City pursuing an exciting opportunity with the New York Philharmonic. During her time away, she has also entered a new relationship with Oliver, seemingly giving herself the fresh start she believed she needed after the frustrations of season 1.

However, returning to Texas proves far more emotionally complicated than she anticipated.

Instead of finding the emotionally guarded Staten she left behind, Quinn encounters a dramatically changed version of the man she’s loved for years.

According to Kelly, that transformation catches Quinn completely off guard.

“She really wanted to move on,” the actress explained.

At the conclusion of season 1, Quinn had become increasingly frustrated with Staten’s inability to fully express his feelings and commit to the future she envisioned. Choosing New York wasn’t simply about advancing her musical career—it was also an attempt to emotionally move forward.

During those months away, Quinn builds what appears to be a healthy relationship with Oliver.

Kelly believes that relationship was entirely genuine rather than an attempt to make Staten jealous.

“She went to New York to fulfill her purpose and her dream to play with the New York Phil[harmonic], and she’s living in New York and having a good time,” Kelly explained.

There, Quinn meets Oliver.

“It’s easy to romanticize this new shiny thing.”

Yet returning home changes everything.

To Quinn’s surprise, Staten has evolved into the partner she always hoped he could become.

“He’s telling her everything she’s ever wanted to hear from him,” Kelly said.

Unfortunately, his emotional breakthrough comes after Quinn has already begun building another life.

“And it’s just a little too late.”

That emotional timing creates one of season 2’s central conflicts.

Rather than presenting a straightforward love triangle built around indecision, the series explores how people can genuinely love different versions of their lives at different moments.

Kelly doesn’t even view Quinn’s situation as a traditional triangle.

“In season 2, the love triangle Quinn finds herself in with Oliver and Staten wasn’t meant to be a triangle,” she explained.

Instead, Quinn sincerely believed she had moved forward.

Only after returning home does she realize unresolved feelings remain.

That complexity helps explain why Ransom Canyon has connected with audiences beyond standard romantic drama formulas.

Rather than relying exclusively on misunderstandings or manufactured conflict, the series frequently explores the difficult reality that life rarely unfolds according to perfect timing.

Sometimes people grow—but not simultaneously.

Sometimes opportunities appear after someone has already started over elsewhere.

Sometimes the right person arrives at the wrong moment.

Kelly believes those emotional contradictions make Quinn particularly relatable.

“It just goes to show it takes a long time to learn how to figure that sort of thing out,” she said.

“It’s something we can all relate to.”

The actress believes viewers recognize themselves in Quinn’s uncertainty because relationships rarely offer simple answers.

“Relationships are hard,” Kelly continued, “and big decisions are hard to make when you want to do the right thing.”

That emotional authenticity remains one of Ransom Canyon‘s greatest strengths.

Even without Billy Brinks unexpectedly joining the romantic chaos, season 2 provides plenty of heartfelt dilemmas, difficult choices, and emotional reunions. And while Dan Reynolds ultimately stayed behind the microphone instead of returning to the ranch, Kelly’s playful behind-the-scenes revelation shows just how much fun the cast continues to have bringing the Netflix hit to life.

For now, Billy Brinks remains a memorable one-season surprise. But after Kelly’s enthusiastic pitch—and the overwhelmingly positive response to Reynolds’ original cameo—fans may not have seen the last of the charming cattle buyer just yet. If schedules ever align, Ransom Canyon has already proven that there’s always room for one more unexpected visitor in town.
