Lioness Season 3 First Look: Zoe Saldaña Opens Up About Joe’s Most Challenging Mission Yet

Zoe Saldaña is preparing to return as CIA operative Joe McNamara in the highly anticipated third season of Lioness, and the actress admits that the upcoming chapter pushed her further than she initially expected.

According to Saldaña, series creator Taylor Sheridan had ambitious plans for Joe in season 3. The actress had several conversations with Sheridan about the direction of the story, and while she ultimately became excited about where he took the character, the role presented some serious challenges.

Saldaña openly acknowledged that the material was demanding and that, at first, she was not even certain she would be capable of delivering everything the character required.

“I didn’t even know if I was going to be able to pull it off,” she admitted, emphasizing just how intense the new season became for her.

The challenge is notable considering Saldaña’s extensive experience with physically demanding and high-profile franchises. She has starred in some of the biggest films in modern cinema and has become one of the highest-grossing actors in movie history. She also added an Academy Award to her list of accomplishments in 2025.

Yet Lioness has given Saldaña an opportunity to explore a different side of her abilities. Through Joe, she plays a woman who must constantly balance military and intelligence operations with the emotional responsibilities of being a wife and mother.

Joe is repeatedly placed in situations where her life is at risk. At the same time, she is expected to lead her team, make difficult decisions and remain emotionally strong for the people around her. Away from the battlefield, however, she struggles to maintain meaningful relationships with the people she loves.

For Saldaña, that combination is one of the main reasons she continues to be drawn to the series.

She particularly appreciates the way Lioness combines intense action with complex emotional storytelling. The show is not simply about missions, weapons and high-stakes operations. Saldaña explained that she would not be interested in participating in a series that focused exclusively on action. What makes Lioness compelling for her is the emotional connection between its characters and the complicated relationships that develop among them.

Throughout the first two seasons, Joe recruited two women to become part of her covert operations. Cruz Manuelos, played by Laysla De Oliveira, became the first new Lioness, while Josie Carrillo, portrayed by Genesis Rodriguez, joined the team in season 2.

Both women were placed undercover as part of missions connected to the CIA’s ongoing fight against terrorism.

The second season ended with an especially dangerous operation. Joe and her team found themselves surrounded and facing the possibility of capture. With the situation appearing hopeless, they prepared to take drastic measures rather than allow themselves to be taken alive.

Fortunately, help arrived before the team was forced to make that final sacrifice.

Although the immediate crisis was resolved, the mission came at a significant cost. Several members of the team were injured, and Joe eventually returned to Washington, D.C., where she reunited with her husband, Neal, played by Dave Annable.

The third season picks up with Joe continuing to struggle with the competing demands of her professional and personal lives.

Her world is becoming increasingly complicated as hidden organizations, international operatives and personal betrayals begin to overlap. The threats Joe faces are no longer confined to specific missions. Instead, the danger increasingly affects every part of her life.

Joe receives support from CIA Deputy Director Westfield, played by Michael Kelly, as well as Kaitlyn Meade, her superior and mentor, portrayed by Nicole Kidman.

Together, they help Joe navigate an increasingly dangerous environment in which it becomes difficult to distinguish between professional enemies and personal threats.

As the new season approaches, Saldaña says Joe is facing a major turning point.

The experiences of season 2 have forced Joe to reconsider what her oath truly means and how much she is willing to sacrifice to fulfill it. She is deeply committed to her duty, but becoming a wife and mother has created an entirely new conflict for her.

Joe has always been able to put her mission first. Now she has a family waiting for her at home, and that makes every dangerous assignment more complicated.
